European Workshop on Chironomidae Identification Methodology, Bratislava, Slovakia

The 4th European Workshop on Chironomidae Identification Methodology was held in Bratislava, Slovakia, from January 27th to 31st, 2025. The event addressed identification methodology, procedures, and challenges associated with insect larvae of the Diptera family Chironomidae.
Organized by the Water Research Institute, Bratislava, and the Institute of Zoology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, the workshop included introductory lectures on the ecology and morphology of chironomid larvae, demonstrations, and practical sessions catering to varying levels of expertise.
The workshop focused on the most common subfamilies, including Tanypodinae, Diamesinae, Orthocladiinae, and Chironominae, and covered key identification techniques, such as larvae handling, slide preparation methods, and the recognition of morphological characteristics. The identification of chironomid larvae is important due to their role as indicators of water quality and their importance in food webs, energy flow, and ecosystem functioning.
Furthermore, participants were introduced to Natural History Collections and Museomics, a peer-reviewed, diamond-open-access journal that aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of natural history and its impact on society.
